Antimicrobial Mouthwash

« Back to Glossary Index

Antimicrobial mouthwash is a dental hygiene product that is designed to kill or inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. It contains active ingredients such as chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, or essential oils like eucalyptol, menthol, and thymol. Regular use can help prevent gum disease and maintain oral health.

According to the American Dental Association, there are two types of mouthwash: cosmetic and therapeutic. Antimicrobial mouthwash kills bacteria to control or reduce bad breath, gingivitis, plaque, and tooth decay, often requiring a prescription.
